Wilmington, Del. (AP) -- One of the nation's leading girls high school basketball recruits last year will attend the University of Delaware this fall, foregoing a basketball scholarship at the University of Connecticut. Elena DelleDonne said in a statement released Monday that both she and UConn require 100 percent dedication to basketball, but she cannot give that level of commitment right now. She says it would be unfair to UConn and Coach Geno Auriemma for her to play for the Huskies. Her withdrawal from UConn was announced last week. Auriemma said in e-mails to The (Wilmington, Del.) News-Journal and The Hartford Courant on Monday that DelleDonne had not been released from her scholarship. If she is released, she would be immediately eligible to play other sports at Delaware, but would have to wait a year to play basketball. |
