(WTNH) _ Video: every single coach relies on it. And, it's why the video department is one of the busiest on campus. It's also why the department is a far cry from what it used to be back in 1995 when it was just two VCR's and a television.
From August to April, Dave Kaplan and his supporting cast are some of the busiest workers in Storrs. "It never stops," Kaplan said. "You have to love it because it's more a lifestyle than a job." 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. "It just encompasses your whole life," Kaplan said. So what is it that Kaplan does? "Provide coaches whatever they want," Kaplan said. And that is just the start. With 26 teams, there's a lot of work to do: football, basketball, soccer are the most demanding. Whatever video support a coach or player needs they get. "When they succeed on game day, it's a great feeling for us because we had some small part in their success," Kaplan said. With athletic success has come video production demand. Their camera's are at games and press conferences. And, this year, they even started a web-based channel. "We are streaming every game live to our fan base and we are also putting together features on student athletes which we never did before," Kaplan said. Their $2 million facility, housed inside the new football complex, does it all -- even video board messages. Scouting the opponents is not a problem. With 40 satellite receivers, they record every game imaginable. "That's a good question," Kaplan said laughing. "We usually have video. If we don't, we could get it rather quickly." In the end, Kaplan believes, "We've got the finest department in the country."
