(WTNH) _ Hundreds of student athletes compete in Division I sports at UConn and several of them are getting a chance to go professional.
Ketia Swanier didn't even have to relocate to make the transition from college player to pro player. She was drafted in the first round of the WNBA draft by the Connecticut Sun with a 12th pick overall. "I think it's really special. You know, you look back to during the NCAA tournament, all those commercials they showed the percentage of how many people are actually able to move on and go to the next level," Ketia said. "I think it's a big accomplishment and I feel blessed to even be able to continue to play basketball." Swanier's classmate, Charde Houston, was picked in the third round, 30th overall to the Minnesota Lynx. She scored 21 points in her professional debut, making some teams question if they should have picked her sooner. The football team's success was noted by pro teams after two Huskies were drafted. Defensive back Tyvon Branch went to the Oakland Raiders while lineman Donald Thomas has signed on with the Miami Dolphins. Branch was picked up by Oakland in the fourth round. He has already practiced with the team and hopes to have a role in the defense and on special teams. Either way, he is thrilled at the opportunity. "I'm happy with the outcome, I'm in a great position, a great spot. It's a great opportunity to be a part of history, they have, like you said, a rich tradition out there," Branch said. "It's a dream come true." Donald Thomas, who only started playing football in college, caught the eye of a New Haven native who also happens to be the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Tony Sporano drafted Thomas in the sixth round even though he fumbled the phone call with the initial offer. "My phone rang, I saw an unfamiliar number and so I was real excited and I picked the phone up and accidentially hung it up as soon as I said hello. So I called it right back and they said, 'Hello, Miami Dolphins front desk.' And then they called me right back while I was on the phone. I said, 'Never mind, never mind, they're calling me right now.' It was the vice president and he said, 'Are you ready to be a Dolphin,'" Thomas explained. Two other Huskies are also getting their shot in the NFL. Defensive lineman Dan Davis signed a free agent deal with the Indianapolis Colts and linebacker Danny Lansanah signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers. |
