Storrs (WTNH) _ Sarah Neuschwander is one of UConn's four student athletes from Alaska and says she came across America for academics and softball.
And let's face it - for a high school athlete in Alaska, especially in softball, there aren't too many scholarship offers from the Lower 48. "There's no recruiting whatsoever in Alaska. No one comes up to Alaska to recruit," Sarah said. So Sarah and some of her Alaskan teammates spent a whole year fundraising to pay for a couple of trips to tournaments where coaches could see them play. Coach Mullins liked what she saw. Neuschwander got a scholarship offer from UConn and now she is dealing with all sorts of logistical problems being away from home. "It makes it hard you know, phone calls, something as simple as calling home. You don't think about it but I'm in school in the mornings, they're still sleeping cause it's 6am. I get out of class and they're just like getting to work," Sarah explained. And it's anything but a quick trip home. "It takes an entire day flying, cause you're not counting time changes and everything. If you were to actually count the hours in the air flying, it's like 12 hours. Then you have the four hour time change, so then you add four more," Sarah said. Sarah will probably head back to Alaska after graduation. |
