(WTNH) _ A lot of people may not know it, but the women's hockey team is one of the best in the country.
There are 32 Division I women's college hockey teams and the Huskies have been ranked among the top ten all season long. "I guess we're a pretty well kept secret but soon enough you'll be hearing about us," said senior Jaclyn Hawkins. "It doesn't really matter, as long as we keep winning and putting our name out there. I don't know if we'll ever get the respect that we deserve, but that's okay." Even students on campus don't realize there is a women's ice hockey team. "When you talk to people on campus and they ask you what sport you play cause they'll see your gear on.. and you say ice hockey... and they're like ooh-- i didn't even know we had an ice hockey team...so that's kind of a kick in the face," said senior Bridget King. Heather Linstad was hired to get the program started and nearly eight years later she is among the winningest active coaches in the sport. "I came here with the expectation we could build something special," she said. "You can see it in our recruiting that every year we are getting better recruiting classes. In order to recruit you need to win and I think we've gotten to that." They're a young team, but the Huskies believe they have the chemistry to make it to hockey's National Championship--The Frozen Four. The women will take to the ice Saturday, March 8 against Providence College in the 2008 Hockey East Tournament. |
