Storrs (WTNH) _ The senior guard for the women's basketball team has exceeded the expectations Coach Auriemma.

"If you had told me in November of her freshman year that she was gonna start this many games at Connecticut and play this many minutes and win this many games and make that many threes, I would've been the most surprised guy in the world," Coach Auriemma said.

But that's exactly what the 5'8" senior from Cincinnati has done. Mel Thomas is just 19 points shy of 1,000 career points.

Thomas says the secret to her success is hard work.

"I've wanted it more than anybody else and that's just what I've had to do. Work very hard, harder than everyone else to get here and that's what I try to do every day," Thomas said.

"She has pretty good karma right now. When she's on the floor, good things happen," said Auriemma.

And most nights the place to find Thomas is on the floor - literally. Whether it's chasing after a loose ball or trying for a steal, her hustle really inspires the team.

"She just has a lot of heart and that really carries over to the rest of us. When I see her diving for or hustling for a loose ball, getting offensive rebounds or things like that, it makes me want to go even harder," said teammate Maya Moore.

By the time her UConn career is over, Thomas will break most of the schools three point shooting records, but she has her eye on the championship.

"I feel like this is the best chance we've had since I've been here to go deep into the tournament and it's just so much fun playing with this team," Thomas said.

The Huskies take on BYU tonight at the Hartford Civic Center.
