TAMPA, Fla. (Tuesday, January 06, 2009) - The No. 1/1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team forced 26 turnovers and held the Bulls to 11 points in the second half as the Huskies defeated South Florida 83-37 in their BIG EAST Conference opener on Tuesday night in the USF Sun Dome.

Jeff Adrien (Brookline, Mass.) led all scores with 17 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Stanley Robinson had a game-high 15 boards, helping the Huskies out-rebounded the Mountaineers 52-33. Robinson contributed seven points and four assists in the game.

 Louisville returns to familiar territory with its 11th straight appearance in the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship, while Cincinnati emerges for its first trip to the tournament since 2003. The Cardinals travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face No. 10 Purdue in first-round play on Dec. 5.

Led by junior Justine Landi's triple-double (11 kills, 20 assists, 10 digs), No. 3 seed Louisville beat No. 5 seed Notre Dame 3-1 in the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship final. The Fighting Irish forced a fourth set, but couldn't find an answer for Louisville senior Jana Matiasovska who tallied a match-high 21 kills and six total blocks.

Louisville hosted No. 20 Missouri on Nov. 15 and beat the Tigers behind multiple first-place efforts from Junior Carlos Van Isschot and sopohomore Therese Bergstrom. Van Isschot was named the men's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week after being part of two record setting relays in the win. Bergstrom earns the women's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honor with a pair of first-place finishes in two breaststroke events. 

The Georgetown men and Villanova women won the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., on Oct. 31.  Junior Andrew Bumbalough led the Hoyas with a time of 23:55 in the men's 8,000-meter race.  Senior Frances Koons paced the Wildcat women with a 20:13 finish on the 6,000-meter race.

DePaul freshman Matthew Graham has earned men's BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors for his role in the Blue Demons' fourth-place finish at the Fordham Fiasco in the Bronx, N.Y.  On the women's side, sophomore Lilian Jelimo of Cincinnati has been named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week for leading the Bearcats to a team victory at the Queen City Invitational in Alexandria, Ky.

The 2009 BIG EAST Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships have a new home, the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. Home to the 2008 Olympic Diving Trials, the swim center is part of the IUPUI Sports Complex on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The championships will be held Feb. 18-21, 2009.

Three BIG EAST women's lacrosse coaches have been named to the 2008-09 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, Inc. (IWLCA) Board of Directors.

Rising senior Mike Van Sickle was tabbed a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Syracuse University women's lacrosse head coach Gary Gait has been named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). In his first year at the helm of the program, Gait led the Orange to a school-record 18 wins, the BIG EAST regular-season and championship titles and an appearance in the national semifinals of the NCAA Championship for the first time in school history.

The BIG EAST Women's Rowing Championship is set to commence on April 27 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The championship opens with lt;br />two Varsity Eight preliminary races at 8:30 and 8:40 a.m. Final races will begin at 11:50 a.m.
